From the lush highlands of Matagalpa, Nicaragua, comes this clean, balanced gem from renowned Selva Negra. Grown under a canopy of native shade trees, this washed coffee is a model of both quality and responsible farming. We think the story behind this coffee is too good not to share - here’s a quick history lesson.
In the 1880s, the Nicaraguan government invited young German immigrants to settle in the northern highlands to help establish a thriving coffee industry. Many accepted the call, founding some of the country's most prominent coffee estates - several of which still bear the names of their European homelands.
Selva Negra, which translates to “Black Forest,” is one such estate. Its coffee farm, La Hammonia - a nod to Hamburg - sits at approximately 4,000 feet above sea level and has been cultivating high-quality Arabica coffee for over a century using traditional methods.
Today, the farm is owned and operated by Eddy Kühl and Mausi Kühl-Hayn, direct descendants of two original settlers: Alberto Vogl and Klaus Kühl. Their legacy is more than just coffee - it's a continued commitment to sustainable farming, community, and excellence in every cup.
Why We Love It:
Selva Negra isn’t just a farm - it’s a pioneer in sustainable coffee production. This bean tastes good and does good. The cup is smooth and well-structured, with notes of milk chocolate, honey, and subtle red apple acidity. Its mellow sweetness and silky body make it a go-to for those who want an easy-drinking yet deeply satisfying brew. Perfect for French press, drip, or as a mellow espresso.
